🧠 Things to Notice
A fraction, decimal, and percent can look different while still describing exactly the same amount.
On a 10 × 10 grid, each small square represents one hundredth of the whole, or 1%.
Changing the number of equal parts changes the fraction used to name the shaded region, but equivalent fractions may still represent the same portion of the whole.
📘 Vocabulary
Fraction: A number that represents part of a whole and is written with a numerator and denominator.
Numerator: The top number of a fraction. It tells how many equal parts are being considered.
Denominator: The bottom number of a fraction. It tells how many equal parts make up one whole.
Decimal: A number that uses place value and a decimal point to represent a whole number, part of a whole, or both.
Percent: A ratio that compares a quantity to 100. The percent symbol means “per hundred.”
Equivalent: Having the same value even though the representations may look different.
Whole: The complete object, quantity, or region being considered.
Equal Parts: Sections of a whole that are the same size.
Shaded Region: The selected portion of the model used to represent a numerical value.
🔢 Fraction, Decimal, and Percent Equivalence
A fraction can be converted to a decimal by dividing the numerator by the denominator.
\(\text{Decimal}=\frac{\text{numerator}}{\text{denominator}}\)
A decimal can be converted to a percent by multiplying by 100 and adding the percent symbol.
\(\text{Percent}=\text{Decimal}\times100\%\)
For example, one-half, five-tenths, fifty-hundredths, 0.5, and 50% all represent the same portion of one whole.
\(\frac{1}{2}=\frac{5}{10}=\frac{50}{100}=0.5=50\%\)
